Whisper on location

Whisper in the twilight

At long last, my September stashbuster is completed. Just in time for the first hint of a cooler weather yesterday and I wore it out immediately. I love it! Good thing to have bought the lovely shell buttons well before hand. Just that, the cardigan is not quite child-proof. Both of my kids took turns every so often to tuck at my sleeves to tell me to look at something yesterday. And I couldn't help but gapped at the way the sleeve stretches. Calmer is, by the way, rather stretchy and doesn't bounce back quite as readily as wool. It is a dream to knit though. And the sleeves are too big on top of being too long. The problem, I reckon, has to do with my too thin arms. I wish I could transfer some of my ample thighs and calves to my arms. On the whole, the cardigan is still a bit on the big side for me. My husband's comment: woa, so white. Well, the colour is not called 'Bleached' for nothing.

All over the place

Whisperdonecollar

I have every intention of finishing Whisper within this week before we all leave for Singapore next Monday but I just don't have enough energy to do it. All I can say is I'm glad this work week has come to an end.  The collar works, it's sewn and I have one more sleeve to knit and the finishing to do. Looks like I might not have time to stashbust this month as I'm going to allocate the rest of the month to finish Whisper, sew my backtack bag(s) and knit socks!

Leaves_socktober_1

I've joined Lolly's Socktoberfest. The yarns you've seen earlier, the new sock books, Charlene Schurch's Sensational Knitted Socks and Nancy Bush's Knitting Vintage Socks arrived this week. I love both of them and there are already a couple of socks in both books that I would love to attempt. Socks definitely would be perfect for travel knitting next week.

The sock books arrived together with the Denyse Schmidt Quilts which is simply fantastic. So clear are the instructions even for a beginner like me and the photos are very good, the book is full of inspirations.

We didn't make it to the Shamshuipo fabric trip as planned last Saturday and Vivian on hearing my plight of lacking suitable fabric for my backtack buddy offered me some of hers in the preferred colourway. So we met up at Western Market and I couldn't help it and bought more fabrics. On the way out, I spotted a brown cotton fabric with polka dots of various shades of blue and brown woven on it and it was one of those 'I must have it' moment. It would go very well with these blue leather handles, and I thought would be perfect for my backtack pal. After all the excitement settled down, it struck me that the fabric might be too mature for her (I think she's still in college), and she might like something younger looking. Otherwise, I'll use the other stripey fabric in the same colour tone or the other recent addition to my fabric stash. Thing is, I just can't make up my mind on the pattern and fabric and I feel a little under pressure because she's so creative and sews very well. I change my mind at least 3 times a day what to make for her. Guess I just have to get my act together as the deadline is looming.

So off we go to Singapore, see you in a week's time!

Slowly whispering

It is October and I'm still slowly and steadily knitting my September stashbuster, Whisper. The collars are done and here they are.

Whispercollar

Still not quite sure how they are going to fit onto the neckline and here's how the front and back look right now. I'm going to sew on the collar and then knit the sleeves, sort of lessening the pain of all the finishing at one time.

And the fabric they lie one, which is suppose to become a matching skirt. So much for sale fabrics. The black bled and the white flowers are now grey flowers. I think I'm still going to make a skirt from it anyway. And the ebayer that I mentioned in the previous post, she refunded me part of the money because she couldn't find one of the fabrics that is suppose to make up the set. Oh well, I'll go look somewhere else then.

The early bird catches the worm

There are many benefits of waking up early. Second week into the new school year and we're all pretty much better adjusted to the alarm clock ringing at dawn. The 10 mins walk to and from the school bus is refreshing and I find myself with an extra pocket of 20-25 mins each morning between sending Ji Yuan off and catching my own bus to work and the little one is still in bed. Some days I read the papers, some days I write out cheques for the bills. If there are photographs to be taken for the blog, I can now take them in the morning light and I won’t be in as much a rush as before.

Whisperarmhole

Whisper has got a back. I love the dart decreases/increases at the waist. This is the first time I work with such shaping and it looks nice and tailored. The shoulders, I short-rowed instead of doing the choppy decreases as described in the pattern. As for the armhole, I experimented with placing the decreases one stitch from the edge and the result is pleasing, much smoother than before. Jody has also showed us earlier on in this post how she made her armhole shapings smooth her way.

Whisperback

I'm thinking of sewing a skirt to go with Whisper using this black floral fabric which was on clearance at Western Market, using McCall's Stitch n Easy pattern (#M4900) which seems the easiest I can find. Rather than testing on my girls, I'd better be the guinea pig of my own sewing.

I find myself often short of this and that when it comes to sewing. One day, I run out of interfacing, the next, I find that I haven't got the right colour thread. So I have to go to Shek Ban Street, which fortunately is just a stone's throw away from my office, during lunch most of the days. Speaking of which, there are two stores that are becoming my favourites. I would love to snap a photo of them but am so afraid the store owners will run after me with a stick. One of the stores is a zipper store that sells also threads, trims and other notions. The owner is really nice. The other favourite is a button store, the owner is a bit eccentric and has a habit of mumbling to herself but is really nice to chat to. She has a collection of odd and end buttons, seldom more than 8 of each type. She has some nice trims and ribbons and sequin and stuff too and best of all, she doesn't mind me standing them, going through her stuff. I don't know about you, I mind about service. If the sales person is helpful, I find myself patronizing that shop more often than one that has the right goods but poor service, just like that the other button and trim store run by the man in the same street. I asked if he has a particular type of trim and he replied not very kindly that all his goods are out there and you find it yourself, and he didn't even have a customer besides me then. Anyway, I walked away, wouldn't you?

Hmm… calmer

I finally decide on Whisper from the Calmer Collection for my September stashbuster project. Better knit what's calling to me. The bag of Calmer was bought years ago when Colourway was having a sale and I've been keeping it, savouring it, not being able to find a project that is worthy for it. Now I wish I've started earlier. I love knitting with it! It's so soft and light like cotton candy, hmm, and the white is so just so white. I love the tucks, although when I do them, Nip & Tuck, Nip & Tuck keep coming to my mind and I didn't even like that series. And I don't even have a gauge problem to talk about, spot on stitch and row wise. Only thing is the fabric produced crumples quite easily and would need some good blocking or steam ironing.

Whisperwip

That's all for today folks. I'll be silently knitting away on this. Okay, okay, I'll tell you what's lurking in my mind:

  • A snack bag and piano book bag for Ji Yuan

  • Crochet bag for sil

  • Rehearsal or practice bag for sil's stripy bag before making the real one

  • Thinking of bag patterns for my backtack pal, maybe I'll knit one instead of sew like Jess suggested

  • Bags for my local pals – I'm planning to make at least 4-5!

  • Knit socks, socks, socks

  • Sew dresses for my girls or even myself before winter sets in

  • Knit a laceweight stole, maybe Madli from Interweave

But what I really need most now is to go to bed. New school year, new schedule, have been getting up one and a half hour earlier than usual since beginning of September and I find myself not functioning after 10 pm. Good Night, friends.
